Media degrees: who's laughing now?

xylopwn [Edit] [Delete] 13:02, 3 November '10

Spin off from partyheart's panic over his or her degree.

I didn't take media studies myself, but it's interesting how many people still refer to it as a joke degree. Maybe it is in terms of academic standing of course, but I know a lot of folk whose media qualifications at least got them a crap internship in broadcast, publishing or marketing, and the ones that weathered that big cask of bullshit are doing well for themselves.

In comparison, I know a *lot* of English lit, lang and history students who are either unemployed, working a job in an industry they don't want to be in or suddenly enthusiastic about teaching despite earlier protests that they were "never going to go into that" (not that there's anything wrong with teaching, as long as you actually have the passion for doing it!)

Sure, I know bankers, accountants and analysts who have done well from maths and economics degrees, and my engineer friends are laughing all the way to the gold-plated bank. But once media students are over being a little green out of uni, they seem to get into one related industry quickly enough.

Obviously this is based entirely on People I Know and therefore mega innaccurate BUT... it's funny that snobs still scoff at that area of degree. That's all.

tl;dr - lay off the media lot, it's a mahoosive collective industry and there's a lot of jobs going.
