Earphones with a button on the wire that makes the sound much better

Right, I'm probably being really stupid here, but what the fuck is this about? I've just had some relatively expensive (£30) earphones delivered, and the sound is absolutely awful. However, if you press and hold down the button halfway up the cable , the sound's great. I've had this with cheap earphones before and assumed it was a weird design fault, but never with expensive ones. Previously I was able to twist a paperclip round the button to act as a kind of clamp, but that won't work with these ones.

I'm sure I'm missing something really obvious but I've read the manual and there's no mention of what I'm doing wrong. It's pretty annoying.
