People getting angry about Thomas Cromwell being portrayed sympathetically in Wolf Hall

Been reading a lot of comments in the reviews of Wolf Hall. They're full of strange people who seem to be personally offended at the depiction of Cromwell as a rational and compassionate moderniser in a brutal and dogmatic time.

I've no doubt that the version of events in Wolf Hall is a deliberate re-imagining, re-examination of a period that has been set in stone by centuries of interpretation and mis-interpretation. But I find it a bit bizarre that people can get all argumentative and defensive about stuff that happened half a millennium ago. What are they upset about?

I can understand why dramas about the Iraq War or the miners' strike are politically sensitive, but why are people getting excited about the pros and cons of dissolving the monasteries or the legacy of Tomas More as a pious martyr? I don't see how they can be aligned along political divisions these days at all, but they are for some reason.
