Happy Australia Day!
All the neighbours are hammered.
My cousin was concerned that I have no plans for Australia Day, as my TV is in Holland for work. I said it's OK, I need to clean the unit and do some recording.
They see it like a big deal, on a Christmas scale, I see it as the strange phenomenon of a mid-week public holiday. I assured them I wasn't depressed or anything like that, just a non-day. It didn't seem like the response they wanted.
The neighbours are drunk and shouting on their balcony, it's entertaining listening to their conversations and doing impressions of them to myself. My Australian impression (QLD at least) is on point by now.
Lots of people on the radio were talking about indigenous rights and the weird focus of what most people are celebrating as part of this day.
Most people are listening to the JJJ Hottest 100. I listened to some of it then I got bored of music. The presenters while it was on sounded quite assured that it was a massive deal worldwide. I'd never heard of it before I lived here. They did a quick interview with Megan James from Purity Ring during the countdown. Asked questions like "what are you doing on this special day?". She said "I'm going to get some dinner then go to bed". No-one cares.
Having Tuesday off makes Monday decent.
Happy Australia Day!
