"We’ve always loved Heavy Metal, we’ve been playing for years and this is what we love doing’ Enthuses bassist Dave Kowatch, a man who, while looking quite intimidating in his appearance, is both polite and friendly throughout our time together. ‘There’s a lot of bands that the record company puts out and they’re just like ‘OK, play these songs heavier and do this, this and this!’ and they’ve got a good image. We recorded the album the way we wanted it recorded and we recorded it with people that had the same frame of mind that we did. It’s exactly what we wanted to do and it came from our influences and not being about making money and being put on the radio’ he states, voicing his intent but still trying as hard to be nice about it.
In fact, you wouldn’t think it was the same guy a few hours later, flinging himself around the stage of London’s Astoria as Dry Kill Logic finish up there brief tour in support of label-mates Spineshank.
‘The UK kids have just been loving the music’ Dave says with unabashed joy, ‘It’s cool for us to come out into the middle of no-where and kid’s to know your songs and shout out for songs they wanna hear and scream along with you.’ He’s a man who is quite obviously passionate about his music and his love for DKL’s ever rising amount of fans. One may even be forced to say that the Logic boys force more of a reaction out of tonight’s heaving throng than the headline act themselves.
But it’s not always been peaches and cream for the band. Despite the fact this is their debut release, Dry Kill Logic (formerly known as Hinge) have actually been grinding the musical axe for the best part of six years. The band started out in ’95 with a completely different line-up and have just worked their asses off to get to where they are in the current day. From releasing a self-financed E.P. ‘Cause Moshing is Good Fun’ in ’98, the band have had to endure both name and member changes. After such a long time as an unsigned act, do the band feel as if there success is warranted?
"Not really’, counters Dave quickly, ‘We never thought it took too long but from playing since ’95 we’ve gone threw a lot of changes and we grew a lot. When we started getting bigger in the states and on the East coast, we knew something was going right. And through our guitarist change we knew we had something good cause we were getting positive feedback from all of the important people instead of getting put on hold but we were never like ‘We deserve it!’ We just worked at it.’
This is the sort of attitude that is installed within Dry Kill Logic. They don’t sit there whining and licking there wounds, they simply get up and come out fighting. Such is the mood of the band, they’re not even daunted of being the opening act for a band like Spineshank, despite there obvious musical differences.
‘We played with them a couple of times in the States, on the Fear Factory tour, so it was cool to get to know them a little bit’, Once again the man is pleasant about all and sundry, ‘When we came overseas with them it was just like reuniting with family members. It was like, we saw each other a week ago and we hung out and partied. They’re nice guys.’
Chances are, if you’re reading this page, you won’t have heard anything by the band. We’ll leave it to Dave to describe his band’s sound to you.
‘It’s definitely heavy aggressive music backed by a lot of talent and you just have to come out to the show. It’s a tiring experience for whoever watches it!’ And the man isn’t kidding. The band are one of the most energetic bands doing the live circuit. Kowatch himself is a flailing mash of dreadlocks and attitude with a sever case of ants in the pants.
Judging by audience reaction this is by no means the last we’ll see of the Logic on these shores. The crowds are going nuts, the message boards of the ‘net are crammed with people fanatical about the band’s live show and all of this within just three months of their debut record hitting the streets. Make no mistake about it, the boys are certainly on the rise.
