Squeaky-clean (and squeaky-voiced) Pop Idol loser Gareth Gates is preparing to return to the spotlight as ITV1 has announced a documentary about the flopped singer.
Gates came runner-up on the television talent contest back in 2002, when he was just 17; after the show, his cover of 'Unchained Melody' sold over a million copies, but his fortunes faded shortly afterwards.
Gates was dropped by SonyBMG earlier this year. He says of the past few years and the upcoming documentary: "The past five years have been a rollercoaster. I hope this gives people a chance to see the real me."
Gates is currently writing his third album and hopes to relaunch himself as a singer-songwiter, probably in the mould of the Morrisons and Blunts of this world. A spokesperson for ITV1 said of the channel's Gates-starring show:
"This prime-time footage will show the impacts and consequences that fame thrusts upon artists hoping to survive successfully within the pressures of the music industry, and will also showcase some of Gareth's new music as he prepares to re-launch back into the spotlight to do what he loves most."
