Festival Preview: 981 Heritage in Spain NOW! @ The Soho Gallery, London, November 21-24, 2012
JonFalcone by Jon Falcone November 7th, 2012

Normally the reserve of corporate events or thin-rimmed spectacles and champagne, for four nights the Soho Gallery will host a culture clash between a UK and Spanish electronic artist. Each artist will set out their stand and give the audience examples of some of the finest electronic music coming out of the two countries as part of the multi-cultural two month Spain NOW festival. Each night has an intriguing pairing set up, making for one of the most interesting events to grace London this year.

November 21 – Cooly G vs Mwëslee

Brixton’s Cooly G will bring a mix of dynamic dubstep, delicate house vocals and some heavy moments for good measure, Mwëslee’s IDM based electronica and madcap mixes should bring the party and offer a great opportunity to see a member of Vigo’s innovative Arkestra Disco collective perform outside of their native Spain.

November 22 - Old Apparatus vs Santiago

The line up tonight will provide the evening for those who consider drums more than the rhythms alone, as East London quartet Old Apparatus bring their blankets of sound to the Soho Gallery with music that evolves and turns with a beauty as dark and as menacing as the artwork on their rather excellent vinyl releases. Santiago Latorre hails from Barcelona and creates minimalist compositions using heavy layering of his voice, classical instruments scrapped and thumped percussively and the softest crooning. Having recently taken a break due to sheer exhaustion, his return should help make for a very special night.

November 23 - Marcus Nasty vs David M

Marcus Nasty has been pushing the new for years now, as a leader of the N.A.S.T.Y crew and pioneer of Grime to his more recent pumping of UK funky out of Rinse FM, Marcus Nasty is a cultural legend rapidly in the making who will hopefully bring his urbanised disco to the show. David M is Barcelona’s own Marcus Nasty who spends his time spinning dub plates to preach UK funky and dub, as well as having putting mixes out over Sub and Rinse FM. This is one for the party people.

November 24 – Dorian Concept vs Judah

Austrian born Dorian Concept brings full on dance electronics with high energy and plenty of cut ups. More melodic and less fraught than Squarepusher, but not as Daft Punk as Shoebaleader One, ‘Trilingual Dance Sepxerience’ despite being made available on January 2nd of this year, still sits atop the pile as on of this years’ best. Judah, aka Andre Grobas is a constituent member of A Coruña’s Norweside collective, a mix of MC’s, DJ’s and producers. In his DJ’ing role Judah brings as much energy as Dorian Concept but gives it a hip-hop, almost gangsta’, back step and shows his love of UK Garage with the vocal splices.

981 Heritage in Spain NOW! takes place at The Soho Gallery, London, from November 21-24, 2012.
