John Phillips, founder of 60's band The Mamas and the Papas, died yesterday morning (18th March) of heart failure.
Phillips formed the Mamas and the Papas in 1965 with his wife, Michelle. He was the main songwriter and penned the hits 'California Dreamin' and 'Monday, Monday' and for the group.
John Phillips was also the father to Chynna (of Wilson-Phillips), actress/singer MacKenzie, and actress/singer Bijou.
"We are all mourning the loss of my dad," MacKenzie Phillips said in a statement to US press. "He was a genius and a good man and will be missed."
