Queens of the Stone Age: 4th Album, Mondo, Martina, Desert, Unkle...
sean by Sean Adams June 9th, 2003
Can you think of a time when Josh Homme and his ZZ-top-bearded-buddy-who-likes-to-get-nekkid Nick Oliveri, have been outta the news? Well, don't expect 'em to be quiet anytime soon..

With at least two side-projects due this year (Desert Session 9+10 + Mondo Generator), you might be surprised to hear Queens of the Stone Age are planning to record 25 new songs before the year is out, amid festivals a-go-go and those UK tour dates (below). This news comes from unofficial website thefade.net who say song titles for the fourth QOTSA album include 'Skin on Skin', 'Everybody Knows That You're Insane', 'Tangled Up in Plaid', and also 'Until Tomorrow' which was leftover from the (Rated) R sessions.

The Queens have secured two permanent members, guitarist Troy Van Leeuwan (A Perfect Circle) and drummer Joey Castillo (formally sticksman for Glenn Danzig) who'll demonstrate their wares on the following UK dates:

June
17th Wolverhampton Civic Hall
18th Glasgow Barrowland
19th Glasgow Barrowland
20th Manchester Apollo
22nd London Brixton Academy
23rd London Brixton Academy
[Glastonbury]

August
16th Staffordshire, UK - Weston Park (V2003)
17th Chelmsford, UK - Hylands Park (V2003)

Side-Project News
These two are both released via Rekords Rekords/Ipecac Records, the label part owned by Mike Patton. Distributed in the UK by Southern.

Mondo Generator, is the side-project of full-time madman Nick Oliveri. Band members on forthcoming record 'A Drug Problem That Never Existed' include former Kyuss and Fu Manchu drummer Brant Bjork, Queens and earthlings? guitarist Dave Catching and Yellow #5 and earthlings? guitarist Molly Maguire. But there's obviously a silly amount of people who popped in for a spliff providing guest slots, including: Josh Homme, Mark Lanegan, Rex Everything, Carlo Von Sexron, Blag Jesus, Troy Van Leeuwen, Pierre Fressarer, Josh Freese, Ashley O, Mark Diamond. It was produced by Chris Goss and recorded at L.A.'s Conway Studio.
The album reportedly "mixes punk rock stop-alongs with the most messed up acoustic strum-alongs you'll ever hear. There is a lot of swearing, a lot of references to drugs and everything that you would hope for from someone that was thrown out of uber-debauched LA punks The Dwarves for being 'too fucked up'."
Released: July 14th

Desert Sessions Volumes 9 & 10, as previously reported features guests Polly Harvey, Dean Ween and Twiggy Ramirez.
Released: August 8th. (Tho' Southern UK suggest it'll be in September)

Eagles of Death Metal - if two side-projects weren't enough, add another one. Josh drums under the name Carlo Vonsexron with Jesse Hughes on an album lovingly-titled 'Peace, Love and Death Metal' which is due out in the last quarter 2003. It'll slot nicely under the "Satanic Bluegrass Stripper" genre in your local record emporium.
Sample: 'I Only Want You'.

Guest Appearances
Josh plays drums and Mark Lanegan (now officially a member of the Queens) does some backing vocals on the Martina Topley-Bird (who used to sing with Tricky) 'Need One' which apparently they recorded backstage at Southampton Guildhall. And if you listen to rumours they co-wrote the song too. Her debut album 'Quixotic' is out in the summer.

Oh and Josh has paid-back the remix of 'No-One Knows' - on the b-side of 'Go With the Flow' - by working on a song called 'Faith In Mind' on the new UNKLE album. The records due to drop on July 28th entitled 'Eye For An Eye'. This UNKLE project also features collaborations from Jarvis Cocker / Brian Eno and Mani / Ian Brown. Nice.

And, and, and... Melissa Auf Der Maur's new LP is now tentatively scheduled for a late summer release. It features Josh Homme, Nick Oliveri, Mark Lanegan, and Troy van Leeuwen from Queens of the Stone Age, Twiggy Ramirez "and lots of Melissa's friends from her home city Montreal."

PHEW!
