Adventure Club

The Train

Label: Re-Action Recordings Release Date: 04/06/2007

benmarwood by ben marwood June 26th, 2007

Yeah, OK, this review is a touch late despite it being in my posession for months, but ‘The Train’ is the kind of song that can just wait patiently whilst you deal with frankly more interesting stuff.

That might sound harsh, but Adventure Club share a lot in common musically with their hometown associates Editors, and they don’t exactly trigger much in the way of excitement. Being far and away the standout track from the forthcoming debut album Wilderness Music, it probably deserves at least some attention, but what I wouldn’t give for it to jump out of its plastic wallet and just look a bit more enthusiastic.

Sure, it’s currently a decent rendition of first-album Editors – reasonably emotionless, snare drum only on beats two and four, brooding verse building to big chorus – but wouldn’t it be much more satisfying if it had big snarly distorty teeth? What if it had a bit of a snare roll occasionally, or maybe less cowbell?

Enough of what it could be, here’s what it is: a typical slice of average-to-good indie pie, cooked at Gas Mark Average, served on a standard-sized plate; the recipe followed to the letter, and not garnished with anything. A catchy repetitive chorus is cancelled out by a vocal performance which is shaky in places, and the points where said vocals do provide a little bit of a kick is partly neutralised by the song’s very last note, a horrendous mash of all the instruments involved and, frustratingly, the smallest suggestion of chaos from the guitars at the start of the second verse is instantly dismissed by super-smooth strings seconds later.

At under two-and-a-half minutes, it’s not going to outstay its welcome many places, but what I wouldn’t have given for it to have aimed a little higher.
