Caz Mechanic

Moveover

Label: Big Potato Records Release Date: 04/06/2007

25038
JoshCole by Joshua Cole June 20th, 2007

Though best known as Caroline Banks, drummer for indie-rockers Seafood, Caz Mechanic has decided to leave the kit behind, and if there's any justice out there then her solo alias will soon shine brightly through. After all, ‘Moveover’ is absolutely gorgeous.

In no way does this sound like a first release. The single’s gradual swell and ripple feels like it’s always been there, buried somewhere deep in your collection for years. Over the course of its seven minutes, Cat Power, Velvet Underground and Felt all lie just below the surface of Caz’s half-sung lyrics and lullaby chimes, before the song builds to its surprisingly memorable and lovely chorus.

This is music for Lazy Summer Days. “Insects buzzing round, yesterday’s paper blows in the wind, watching the world roll by, roll by” sings Caz vaguely on ‘Too Much Thinking’, one of two ace b-sides. It might not be rushing anywhere fast, but where’s there to go anyway? In its own little way, this really ain’t half bad.
