These New Puritans

Elvis

Label: Angular Records Release Date: 21/01/2008

Yes, yes: they’re a permanent fixture on DiS’s front page these days, it seems, but we’ve good cause to celebrate These New Puritans’ output to date, a series of EPs and singles that’ll culminate in their _Beat Pyramid _album next week. The Southend-spawned four-piece, simply, get us twitchy, tap-tapping at our floorboards and click-clicking on our keyboards to keep up with their dizzying and misfiring intellectualisms-seared splatter-beat Kraut-punk.

‘Elvis’, you’ve probably heard before; here, perhaps, or perhaps here, even if that’s an older take on a song that still hasn’t caught up with its age of existence. Our protagonist can’t find the words, over and over; yet he has lots to say elsewhere, and more besides that. A star is born. Was born. Will be born.

‘fff’, the necessary flip, is Liars-stutter freak-out rock, a mantra of pyromania. It doesn’t sparkle like its compatriot here, but bulges with bass lending weight to Jack Barnett’s assertation (oh, follow those links ‘til you find the right one) that TNP share an affinity with dubstep champion/s Burial: looped into a befuddling ecstasy, these songs stick like glue, context paramount but open to personal tailoring.

Elvis is dead, get over it chart-toppers; long live the new kings of the curb-dwelling outcasts set on conquering the echo-clingers content to promote mundanity.
