Talk Normal - Sugarland

Review by Will Metcalfe

Remember the Pipettes? Well, these two ate them for breakfast – and their fucking polka dot dresses. »

Andrya Ambro (drums, vocals) and Sarah Register (guitar, bass, vocals) came together as Talk Normal in 2007, after years of friendship, and they have not stopped moving. Since their lightning-strike first appearance, Talk Normal’s sound has stormed upward and outward, referencing nothing but relating to almost everything, a jarringly songful gale of rhythm and noise supporting pleas and plaints, signal-calls and marching orders (both sing on most tracks). Each Talk Normal show builds on past ones: up-to-the-moment updates of ideas previously stated, new phrasings of old upheavals delivered with increasing focus and joy. Darkness and light; fury, silence, space and sound. Recorded with Nicolas Vernhes and featuring guest spots from Sightings bassist Richard Hoffman — who played on Secret Cog’s “33” and sometimes joins Talk Normal on stage — Sugarland represents a startling surge forward, the clearest expression of Talk Normal’s energy and language. So far.
