Sun Kil Moon - Universal Themes

Review by Matthew Slaughter

Kozelek has often traversed the line between emotional insight and emotional ugliness, yet it has never been so evident as on this record»

Sun Kil Moon aka Mark Kozeleck returns with the follow up to the honest, tragic and perfect album 'Benji'. 'Universal Themes' is once again epic and full of strange meditations on death, work and hard work. The standout tracks include 'The Possum', a nine minute track featuring Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley about dead possums and hanging out with Godflesh. Mot of the tracks are based on grinding riffs while, within their walls, Kozeleck experiments with collage, multi tracked vocals and disorientating shifts in moods. in short, it's another masterpiece from a man that can do no wrong at the moment.
