One listen to Zero Down’s debut full length & remnants of a number of those late 80s/early 90s punk bands begin to filter through. Indeed, for a debut album the amazing song-writing & musicianship is quite astonishing, the driving, hard-edged riffing & slower, more complex drum patterns being reminiscent of early NOFX & the heavier punk rock of Pulley.
No surprises then that Zero Down consists of current & former members of Pulley, the similarly hard-hitting Strung Out and Down By Law. And along with Bad Astronaut & Son of Sam Zero Down is the latest in a recent batch of ‘super-group’ punk bands, but judging by the quality of the toons displayed on this debut ZD may well follow in the steps of older ‘super-group’ bands like Down By Law and Snot.
‘With A Lifetime To Pay’ is an effective mix of proper catchy harmonies in songs like ‘Everybody’s Whore’ & ‘Temptation’, perfectly fusing the styles of Bad Religion and Offspring. All the time everything is kept in place by interesting drum rhythms & classy guitar riffing.
They even touch on the rockier punk of the Supersuckers in faster numbers like ‘No Apologies’ but ultimately ZD have a sound that encapsulates the late 8Os punk rock vibe with modern LA punk production.
