Say what you want about Toad or Fartrocker, but for me Silver Rocket is the top indie rock club in swinging London town, and this compilation collects bands that have played at one, or more, of the club’s first 50 nights. Sure I’m biased – some of these bands I count as mates over musicians – but when a compilation offers you 50 totally different acts over two CDs for no more than seven quid, well, you can’t complain at all, can you?

No! You can’t. At all. So don’t. Want accessible indie rawk? Check out Spraydog’s ‘Get This Way’ and econoline’s ‘Turn Off The Machines’. Both bands are comparative veterans with four shows each under their belts, but many other bands here – Lords, NYC’s Pilot To Gunner (see, it’s not exclusively UK-based bands), Youthmovie Soundtrack Strategies and Todd – have only graced the Upstairs at the Garage stage once in SR’s history.

If it’s swooning and soothing sounds you yearn for, skip your way to offerings by Anglo-Norwegians Jet Johnson (‘Point Of Goodbyes’), Audiowhore (‘Who Died And Made You The Botanist?’) and Prague (‘Needless Talks’). Fans of the noise are well serviced too, with Princess Headbutt turning in a schizophrenic jazz-rock number, ‘Carving The Iron Moustache Part One’, and KaitO’s frenzied ‘Non-Descript’ is breathtaking. Oh, and Part Chimp, officially Britain’s loudest band (I swear they nearly made me vomit once), pop up too. Minus points though for the aforementioned Todd’s fairly pointless minute-or-so of fuzz, ‘Dangerous Drifter’; their forthcoming album is a lot better than this snippet of their work suggests.

I could spend all day listing all the bands on this, but the above serve as a decent snapshot of what’s on offer. There’ll be some stuff you’ll hate, for sure (I can’t bear Magoo**, sorry), but so much stuff you’ll love, and it’s guaranteed that you’ll discover new bands here that’ll become firm favourites. And, be fair, it’s only a handful of chump change out of your salary, so why not, eh? It’s the best damn compilation such money can buy, and an invaluable insight into the underground of the UK and beyond.
