Do Make Say Think

& Yet & Yet

Label: Southern Release Date: 18/03/2002

ltarry by Lucy Tarry March 7th, 2002

"& yet& yet" is the third full-length release from Toronto noise cherubs Do Make Say Think.

The album sticks to the old DMST format in that it is totally excellent, but aside from this it sounds refreshingly new and relatively untouched by the influence of their previous albums, shedding its dubby, space-rock skin and emerging an altogether different post-rock animal.

First track "Classic Noodlanding" sounds like Mogwai's wiser and more self-confident older brother, lulling us nicely into second track, "End of Music"- and if this is what the end is going to sound like then we should kill it now.

This is a full-on, furious, Godspeed-esque assault. Charging along at destructive speed but holding it's struture and unexpectedly intricate melody, whilst plucking out our pulsing veins and bowing them into a bloody, sinewy mess.

"Reitschule" is another melody-laden, stand-out track. Ending with guitar crunches that promise an all out, fight-to-the-death noise war at any minute, but instead fall quiet like the calm after the sonic storm, preparing us for another delicious attack. This is the Quiet/Loud ethic working to the best of it's ability; feel good and devastatingly sad in the same sharp breath.

Penultimate track "Soul and Onward" contains the most simple and stunning harmony that attracts new layers of sound until the song has unknowingly morphed before our very ears.

This is the most inspiring, beautiful and honest record I've heard so far this year- post rock you can really rock to, that has left it's pretentions at the door and laid itself bare.
