Do Make Say Think

Winter Hymn Country Hymn Secret Hymn

Label: Southern Release Date: 13/10/2003

5098
gdobson by Gareth Dobson October 28th, 2003

Post-rock darlings who share the same home as Godspeed You Black Emperor!, **DMST hold the same esoteric leanings as their ethereal brethren, but sit nearer to the avant-jazz side of things.

Two dirty words for the indie-inhibited perhaps, but the noodly-informed amongst us recognise that the Canadian sextet are musicians of a rare virtue. Best experienced on vinyl, the group’s fourth record is set across three movements, the best being Side B’s horns and recurring jazz grooves, most notably the hugely affecting ‘107 Reasons Why’. Nevertheless, the whole affair is deeply involving, full of odd punctuations and wonderful non-linear compositional structures. Probably not for the Shed Seven fans amongst us (prove me wrong, kids) but then again, why give a lager drinker a beautifully-chilled vintage Beaujolais?
