Schizo Fun Addict

The Atom Spark Hotel

"They put a thought in your mind and you just erased it..."

If that thought was gag that man Blunt before he utters another elongated b-eau-t-i-ful-ll then no, that won't be erased until someone actually does it. If, however, I was thinking about what a perfect world it would be if The Pastels, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Vaselines all got back together in a veiled recrimination of past glories then, yes rub it out immediately, because New York foursome Schizo Fun Addict have answered my prayers.

Basically revolving around step-brother and apparently non-speaking sister duo Jet Wintzer and Jane Gabriel, Schizo Fun Addict deliver the kind of frazzled, electro-blues that Anton Newcombe probably has eerie visions about every night in his sleep. 'The Venus Probe' and 'Eraser' are pure psychedelic mayhem in the nicest possible way, floating along on guitarist Hadrian Mordecai's spaceport hovercraft technique.

Meanwhile, Gabriel may be mute where the spoken word is concerned but give her a tune to play with and her honeysuckle smooth vocal pitch is up there with such luminaries as Frances McKee and Katrina Mitchell. The title track is an almost prosthetic nursery rhyme that gives little indication for what is about to come next, which is a reverb heavy, Spacemen 3-like take on the Frank And Walters' 'Fashion Crisis Hits New York', a song that was recorded 12 years ahead of its time as never a truer set of words been written.

Add the mindblowing wig-outs of 'Jellstar' and 'Neo Theme' and you have an album that is equal parts lucid fairytale and apocalyptic prophecy. 'The Atom Spark Hotel' is obviously the best place in town to score - just make sure you keep on the blue and off the brown.
