No-Fly Zone

non-U

Label: Release Date: 01/10/2003

domgourlay by Dom Gourlay November 17th, 2003

For the most part, the prospect of listening to music from the sunnier climes of Europe comes a close second to having your teeth wrenched out whilst your face is drilled without the benefit of anaesthetic. Thankfully, Sicilian quintet No-Fly Zone have less in common with techno DJs and summer novelty records, instead preferring the more austere sounds of Radiohead and the lyrical angst of a latter day Rage Against The Machine.

The opening three tracks on this five song EP are taken from their Italy-only release 'non-U', with the remaining tracks taken from a recent session for Reading's Radio Blast. They show an infinitely more genteel side to their seemingly despondent nature.

The stand-out song is undoubtedly 'The Perfect Wish', oddly one of the "throwaway" tracks on the EP, and yet thanks to Raimondo Alaimo's gut-wrenching vocal, and a truly unforgettable chorus ("Bitter cold takes me to the bitter end, but now I don't mind anymore...") the smart money would be on this being the one that gets No-Fly Zone a spot of recognition outside their homeland.

The only real criticism is that despite some neat hooks and charming melodies throughout, too often the verses don't live up to the chorus and in a world of music that is saddled with forgettable pap, No-Fly Zone maybe just need to raise their game that one iota to ensure Mr Average's recruitment bureau don't get wind and confine them to Sicilian obscurity forever more.
