Chris and Paul Weitz

3 DVDs for Xmas: ET, Back To The Future + About A Boy..

So you’re stuck in the dreaded ‘what the hell do I get people for Christmas’ state of flux. Well never fear, here are three films released on DVD and Video to fill cousin Bob’s stocking.

The Back To The Future trilogy is released as a three disc box set, on 2nd December. The DVD includes 5 hours of special features, including commentaries, deleted scenes, out takes, newly re-mastered audio soundtracks and a fully loaded array of bonus features.

The trilogy broke the mould of traditional adventure film making, and made small children everywhere, dream of the day they could play guitar like Marty McFly and own a flying skateboard.

About A Boy is a story about an apparently emotionally defunct man who devises a plan to pretend to be a single parent to lure the affections of single mothers. But everything goes to plan a little too well and he finds himself saddled with a twelve year old surrogate son.

Based on the third novel by Nick ‘High Fidelity’ Hornby, and brought to our screens by Working Title (the makers of Notting Hill and Bridget Jones’ Diary), the film is riddled with the expected nice-ness of a Hugh Grant movie.

The DVD comes with exclusive material including commentary from the producers, Chris Weitz and Paul Weitz, an interview with Badly Drawn Boy, music videos, the making of About A Boy plus deleted scenes with directors commentary. The DVD is released on 2nd December through Vision Video Limited.

To mark the 20th Anniversary of Spielberg’s *ET*, the film was re-mastered and re-released in cinemas earlier this year. Now it is available to buy on DVD and video.

The film itself contains extra footage and a digitally re-mastered soundtrack. The DVD special features include an interview with Spielberg himself, screen tests, the music of John Williams and a documentary about how ET got from a screen play onto the big screen.

So go, run, struggle your way through the heaving crowd of manic, crazy eyed Christmas shoppers, or be one of those smug bastards who do it all online, part with some of your hard earned cash and make someone smile for at least a couple of hours on Christmas day.
