Union Kid are a new band. They have been 'hotly-tipped' for some time now and listening to this, it's no wonder why. The fuzzy guitars and dynamics which can be best described as dynamic make for a wonderful pop song. When they are angry the music is angry. The anger is relayed as power. Power does not mean down-tuned guitars and frantic screeching by a slightly more frantic-in-nature singer. It means power. You can just feel the anger but you just don't know why. But when Union Kid are sad, their music is sad. As you listen to the heartfelt lyrics and the music has been slowed right down, you can almost feel a frown coming on. It is good. It is very good.
Union Kid are a slightly more mature breed of musician in that they have not just jumped out of college into the studio. Indeed they record their music on their own record label, based in Braintree, Essex. This was not just their excuse for not finding a record deal, they just wanted to do it for themselves. They had the knowledge to record and release their own material and are doing very well for it but for lack of publicity. More is required of this band. Recent shows at the smaller venues are unjustified on the evidence of this record. If you like your music occasionally energetic and always intelligent then Union Kid are surely the band for you.
