Cosmic Rough Riders

Revolution (In The Summertime)

Label: Poptones Release Date: 23/07/2001

dmerryweather by David Merryweather July 23rd, 2001

I dunno, I suppose the former Creation boss, Alan McGee, who once had the far-sighted good sense to sign the likes of My Bloody Valentine, Saint Etienne and the Boo Radleys, has, in a sense, bottled it. Pulling back from where anything that remotely sniffs of modernity is concerned, McGee now only seeks to wrap himself in a comfort blanket of his new label’s roster of acts: bands that, I would think, remind him of the music of his youth.

Scotland’s Cosmic Rough Riders then, painstakingly attempt to re-create a janglesome, Byrdsy/Beach Boysy, West Coast hippy sound of late 60s America. Like McGee and other acts on Poptones, the Rough Riders are in retreat, in denial. Confusing this bloodless facsimile of what’s gone before with ’soul’ and ’integrity’. A desperate struggle for sincerity then, but not wholly awful to listen to, ‘Revolution‘, with it’s airy, harmonising vocals and it’s soft-focused, summer vibe, saunters along pleasantly enough, blinkered but content. Though it never really connects it‘s too much sweet and daffy to completely object to.

Lyrically though, with recent events in Genoa in mind, it is, accidentally, all too apposite: “What we don’t need is a revolution that will blow our minds away”. Oof! Well, quite. “Sunshine brings love” sings Daniel Wylie. It’s a sweet thought Daniel, but it’s time you snapped out of your fantasy world.
