David Gray

Say Hello Wave Goodbye

Label: Release Date: 17/12/2001

jwestfox by James Westfox December 17th, 2001

Of course, it'd be easy for me to destroy this record. To many, David Gray represents all that is wrong with British guitar music. Dull, uninspiring, safe, pointless, sales driven. And he's got dyed blonde hair.

But the weird thing is, I kinda like him. "White Ladder", the massive selling dinner party album from which this is drawn from, is a decent enough record, and this, the fifth (count 'em!) single from, charms into liking it.

The pop historians amongst you will know that this is a Soft Cell song, and Gray has slowed it down, and layered a dozen (maybe less) or so acoustic guitars to it. And sung it in a ever so slightly less camp way. If your in the mood for downbeat acoustic melacholia, then you won't go far wrong with this.

So David Gray then. Like an auntie who buys you records you've already got for Christmas. But with less hair.
