Elf Power

The Naughty Villian/The Great Society

Label: Shifty Disco Release Date: 15/04/2002

gdobson by Gareth Dobson March 12th, 2002

Elf Power release their second Shifty Disco single to mark the celebrations of the label’s 60th (in release years) birthday.

Notably, it is produced by Dave Friddmann, the man responsible for albums by Mercury Rev, Flaming Lips and Mogwai. Hints of Wayne Coyne’s band can be detected in the Athens, GA five piece, but their beguiling, southern fried psychedelia reminisces of others, including bands from their vaunted hometown. Opening track ‘The Naughty Villain’ cleverly guides you along, producing unexpected turns to keep you on your toes, while the third track, a cover of T-Rex’s ‘Dandy in the Underworld’ sounds like an emo-Grandaddy.

Much room for improvement, but definitely worth keeping an eye on.
