Everybody Sees It On My Face

Label: Telstar Records

lparker by Laurie Parker April 27th, 2002

Music takes more than one listen to get a real taste. There are always some songs that grab you right away, sometimes you decide later they’re utter crap. Others grow on you gradually to become tolerable or maybe even necessary to your survival.

I can’t say that LHB’s single 'Everybody Sees It On My Face' is necessary to my survival… but it’s pleasant and funky enough to make a good clubby hit and I can listen to it without needing to fold my ears over. First listen it was so-so, second it was better, third it felt comfortable. The most engaging aspect of it is the beat-—a little breaky, a little eighties, with a nice nostalgic Police 'Invisible Sun' sample layered in. I’m not quite as convinced by the lyrics, they’re pretty standard fluffy club love blah blah. The titular lines of the chorus don’t say much that’s new and interesting-—although at first listen I thought he was singing “Once you’re dead everybody’ll see it on my face,” which would have added a dimension of intrigue to the song. “I want you, I’m gonna kill you and I won’t be able to hide it” is a more interesting message than “I’m embarrassed people will see my lust.” But I’m a stickler for lyrics, most people who listen to dance music couldn’t care less what the man is saying, or even whether he’s saying anything at all. His vocals are nonchalant enough to be cool, albeit a strange pairing with the music—sort of Depeche Mode does a song with Rob Thomas (from Matchbox 20).

So all in all, I can see people dancing to this song and eyeing each other up, I can see them buying the record and playing it when they come back from the club and are sitting in their living room smoking weed. And that’s what club music wants to do, so good on them.
