No Doubt

Hella Good

Label: Interscope Release Date: 03/06/2002

1864
DiSvsMatt by Mat Hocking May 30th, 2002

If you were shocked and, frankly, dumbfounded by Orange County’s finest, and most successful ska-punk troupe’s commercial dance-pop direction following the inconceivably successful ‘Tragic Kingdom’ album then ‘Hella Good’s filthy funk grooves and neo-electro flavour will set out to spin you even more.

Unlike the painfully catchy (and equally annoying) kiddy-pop bounce of ‘Hey Baby’, ‘Hella Good’ sets a more sinister tone, oozing a sexy, alluring quality that the distorted keyboard melody brings out before the groovy 70s break allows the guitarist to actually let his hair down for once in a short bluesy burst.

Overall, it’s a pretty weak track and as the second single it exemplifies a pretty dire future in pop for No Doubt. However, it is _a daring choice for a single, not exactly Vengaboys **fodder. Still, they’ve got a long way before they reach the effortless class of **Pink. (Phwoaaarr!_)
