Coldplay

In My Place

Label: Parlophone Release Date: 05/08/2002

mIossifidis by Miranda Iossifidis July 30th, 2002

Even when it wasn’t as hot and sticky as these blessed days we are currently enduring, I still love this song. It is simply beautiful. Or, beautifully simple, it works both ways. Whilst there is not a single unexpected note, there is nothing lacking in this song, seemingly the culmination of Coldplay’s previous efforts, which although well rounded and pretty darn good, were overplayed in the most extreme sense and thereon relegated to ‘oh no not again, doom!’ status.

Anyway, back on task, this song cuts the mustard. Or at least, I’ve been listening to it rather unhealthily for the past week. And I’ve not yet killed myself; go figure.

I’m a sucker for, to put it plainly, good songs, (you know the ones that have pretty guitar melodies, rise and swell, bits you sing along to…) just like the however many million Coldplay fans. But it is their very popularity that is the one thing denying your average music fan (that’s you!) from the adoration this song requires. I’m not sure why. Oh yes, popularity = sell out = not altogether so cool. Okay, maybe that stupid tag doesn’t help (nu-acoustic movement? What the fuck?), but if you non-believers don’t take stock and accept (and love) Coldplay for what they are – awesome song writers, it’ll be your loss in however many years time when they are dead and gone, and you have to listen to their records you finally bought, safe in the knowledge that You Were Wrong. I have one word for you; Abba. Learn from that, ironic disco dancers!
