New Rising Sun

This Is Not A Weapon EP

Label: Outafocus Release Date: 23/10/2002

2615
rcowling by Ralph Cowling October 24th, 2002

New Rising Sun are better than the Datsuns. Their songs are better and although **Led Zep inspired, it’s clear they’ve moved on a bit since then. ‘Swan Song’ is well worth checking out from this EP, and the whole thing is a foot stomper.

If you’re into gravel vocals a la *Gomez, the nucleus of New Rising Sun’s melodies seems to be singer Adrian Conell’s gut projections. Though energy wise, this EP seems a little flat, more an outlet of a bit of romantic steam, than a full valve breaker, as what might be melodic progression goes a bit stale in places. That said, ‘State Of Mind’ is very interesting in a nouveau indie framing, and as has some courageous elements to it that make this ‘Outafocus’ release varied and much more ear worthy. *Not to mention, better than the Datsuns and the bloody Strokes to boot.
