Athlete

El Salvador

Label: Parlophone Release Date: 24/03/2003

3578
gdobson by Gareth Dobson March 21st, 2003

Being a card-carrying South London national, it's always been a bit of a mystery to me why so few of my brethren have achieved big things in the musical world. I mean, aside from Squeeze and Gabrielle, it's all a bit sparse past the Old Kent Road, isn't it?

Athlete however, are threatening to break that MOR stranglehold with their very own brand of, erm twisted MOR tunage. 'El Salvador' sounds like the cheeky Larndan version of Pavement heading for a quick cuppa in a little cafe with their mates the Super Furry Squeezes. And all the better for it really.

It's a jaunty old affair that doesn't veer away from their tried-and-tested clever indie knees up formula. And like their previous singles, it buries itself into your brain until you fall to your knees begging the gods of indie to make it stop.

Happy, happy days.
