Onionz

The Swing EP

Label: Carioca Records Release Date: 19/01/2004

joe_shoo by Shoo January 16th, 2004

Alright, so it’s a bloody daft name. Onionz? Come off it. Still, you gotta give out Reeeeeespect in a massive way to this fine geezer. Starting off at the stupidly young age of 12 by spinning the discs in NYC at B-Boy parties, Onionz quickly moved onto residencies at the Roxy, spent a coupla years working the decks alongside giants like Frankie Bones and Adam X, and these days is usually found chortling to himself in dark corners plotting his latest remixing job for one of any number of a host of bugged-out biffers and beast-beat big-hitters.

The Swing EP, then, draws on Onionz**’ tear-creatingly kule background with a sparkling housey vibe smoothly melded with some slinked-up beatery in the two tracks offered here. Whereas the knock-off deep drive of ’What Mamma Says’ is more a 3am doubledropping daydenier for the Friday feasters than a righteous rustle for the radioheads, it’s on the B side that this really cuts loose.

Re-edited by Yousef and Blakkat, ’Do What You Feel Is Real’ digs in and defiantly draws you into its jacked-out, funked-up, give-me-more, head-ripping, sweat-dripping scenery. Before you know it, the brilliance of the squelchin', inescapable discodirt bassline synchs up with the whoops and whirls of the nighthoppers, chews its classy way out of its cage and ends up playing twister with your tendons.

Grappling with this groove is no way to rudeness: go with it, though, and sure enough, soon enough, a thousand twitching, eager hips will swing together in sultry, shiny sympathy. And stuff.
