The Way It's Meant To Be

Label: Island Release Date: 11/07/2005

thommo by Thomas Blatchford July 12th, 2005

Yes, it’s another re-release from another guitar-centric bunch of rock n’ roll rioters, presumably intent on another stab at riches and infamy (seeing as they’ve recently found favour with Kings of Leon). But whilst this suggests that ‘The Way It’s Meant To Be’ is their only truly great song – the jury’s still out on that one – it also gives The Features another chance to show that they’ve written at least two minutes’ worth of incendiary gabba-gabba-rama-lama-skree brilliance.

There’s enough going on here – handclaps, wailing, organ vibrations, every instrument pounding – but not enough to stop you from feeling that the song is trying to play you, and being grateful that the whole thing collapses before it becomes a comfortable proposition. “Gonna love you ‘til I die / ‘Cos I am yours and you are mine” yelps Matt Pelham, sounding more like he’s trying to justify gagging you and locking you in the airing cupboard than woo you into submission, but what it lacks in subtlety it makes up for in a glorious Technicolour love-buzz. Get filthy, y’all.
