Pure Reason Revolution

The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning

Label: Sony Release Date: 11/04/2005

8056
agibbons by Anthony Gibbons April 4th, 2005

London’s Pure Reason Revolution fuse together a shared love of The Beach Boys, Pink Floyd, and Super Furry Animals** to create cinematic, spaced out signatures which sound like they were beamed in from a parallel universe where prog roolz OK.

So that’s the bleeding obvious statements out of the way now let’s get our ears around the colossal, 12 minute 15 second wonder that is ‘The Bright Ambassadors Of Morning’. This is a song with as many twists and turns as a decent Hollywood thriller, one that could tie the listener in knots just trying to get to grips with it.

So what does it sound like then? God only knows but here goes: ‘Bright Ambassadors…’ starts off like The Orb, mutates into Polyphonic Spree, has a go at being Jefferson Airplane, and tips a wink at Neu! Then this eerie, nerve jangling, guitar riff creeps up from the ether, tiptoeing its way into the subconscious, pausing briefly, before exploding into the biggest, mightiest, guitar riff you’ve ever heard in your life. Ever. It’s like it’s just exploded from some kind of sonic volcano, spurting out a rush of pure, molten, lava, of the kind, one imagines, that fuelled the very legends of rock.

Have sex to 'Bright Ambassdors...' and I reckon this precise point would be an amazing time to shoot your load (at about 8 minutes 33 seconds in case you’re wondering) - just don’t try doing it alone.

A strong contender for single of the year, no question.
