The Violets

Carnival/Descend

Label: Angular Records Release Date: 06/02/2006

12542
holliy by holliy February 10th, 2006

The Violets are mainly in the business of making horrible noise sound melodic and writing melodies which induce shivers in the spine. Taking tuneful guitar lines and welding them to an overall sense of uncompromising feedback-wracked punk blitzkrieg, they basically command you to Dance! Or! Die! and leave you quite happy to be so commanded.

First up we have the 1.39 Descend - it’s an A-Side, but not as we know it. The chorus lacks vocals, relying instead for hook-factor on a jaw-droppingly nasty blast of distorted noise* and leaving it to the verse to carry the tune and melody. Which is a, beautifully, wilfully perverse idea and sets us up quit nicely for the discovery that the B-Side is longer and distinctly more tuneful, switching from spacious reverberations to crunching, claustrophobic distortion, and boasting both tribal-military drums and handclaps. The whole adds up to something like what might be thrown out the back door of an illegal abortion clinic run by Adam Ant and Siouxsie Sioux – only, y’know, more stylish and a hell of a lot sexier. And also far, far more inviting a prospect for closer investigation on the part of you, the reader.

* Caused, the press release informs us, by the dropping of a guitar on the floor.
