I'm Slow But I'm Sloppy / Did I Step On Your Remix?

_"Hey, wait up!"

"Hey, slow down!"

The new Danielson Famile double A-side 7" begins with these cries and spends the next three minutes running to catch up. This song is sprinting along next to the bus, banging on the window, sweating under the summer-blue sky, or looking through it's pockets at the counter while the queue behind gets impatient, eventually having to leave without buying anything. But the geeky melancholy sits hidden under the smiling, loveable, sunny pop facade.

Like The White Stripes if they suddenly broke out of the formalism that seems at once their biggest strength and greatest flaw, 'I'm Slow But I'm Sloppy' (produced by Why?, fact fans) is a combination of catchy, simple songwriting and joyfully tatty experimentalism. Choppy 12-string acoustic guitar and tight loops of marimba give it an exotic fairground atmosphere, and Daniel Smith's loose, stylish vocal lollops along next to the zig-zagging arrangement, with the rhythm scrambling, diving and clicking amicably in the background to a wonderfully serene finish.

The AA-side, 'Did I Step On Your Remix?', manages to combine a 60s girl-group vocal style (the girl group being made up of Smith's sisters) with dripping, minimal electronica and a loping beat - a catchy singalong, splintering into chirpy, churning sections with a lead vocal that reminds of Wyn from Arcade Fire. It's a gorgeous, twisted, bleeping, instantly memorable song that bodes well for the next Danielson album, Ships, which will be released in May of 2006.

Anyone with a love of the leftfield and a penchant for collecting cool seven inches: you need this in your collection.
