The Broken Family Band

You're Like A Woman

Label: Track & Field Release Date: 02/10/2006

17137
carrotrope by Jesus Chigley October 9th, 2006

Displaying the sort of brattish punk ebullience that ran through Brakes' Give Blood, the chorus of 'You're Like A Woman' barrels through you at dangerous speeds, wrapping you up in red-faced and honest fun that's incredibly hard not to submit to. A three-minute tantrum fought with country-tinged chugging and Steven Adams' reedy twang. Like Brakes, there's the minute question of comedy versus rock and roll, but if you can take the cod-American affectations and the_ Muppet Show _melodrama ('You didn't ask about The Broken Family Band', 'Awwww!'), then there's no doubt you'll find something to like in this reworked single from The Broken Family Band's latest, Balls.

If you suffer from the aforementioned comedy allergies, you might want to give B-side 'Gavin's Dead' a wide berth, though. A 'true story about a rabbit in Norfolk', there are horns, filthy riffing and lines like "Gavin's dead / Do-do do do do / He looks like chicken / Do-do do do do". Luckily, the third track in this generous package comes from mini-album Jesus Songs and features Inge Thomson offering a plaintive underscore to 'Poor Little Thing', a delicate country ramble that rounds off this fine little release.
