Do Me Bad Things - What's Hideous?

Review by Anthony Gibbons

You may remember them rocking our birthday party last year. You may remember us tipping them for big things this year. And now, with the album due soon their assualt on pop world raises just one question for Anthony Gibbons "what exactly is hideous: this record or my hairy arse?"»

The Explosion - Here I Am

Review by Anthony Gibbons

Judging by the strident tone and pleading vocals of 'Here I Am' it's clear 'US underground rock band' The Explosion are angry, young men. Quite what irks them one isn't sure, after all they've just signed a mega bucks record deal, Zane Lowe likes them, and they can sleep sound at night knowing their own record label, Tarantula, gave a helping hand to The Distllers. Perhaps it could be the thought of touring with Good Charlotte, and let's face it, that would be upsetting enough.»

The National - Abel

Review by Anthony Gibbons

'Abel' is essentially Johnny Cash singing with The Bad Seeds and there can be no higher praise then that. Yet, we'll praise it some more, not only because it sounds so damn good but also because it boasts a New Order style bass line which makes it forlon, and funky, all at once. Neat trick.»

The Modern - Eastern Bloc EP

Review by Anthony Gibbons

The Modern, led by the unlikely named Chi Tudor-Hart, are supposedly from London's New Cross, look like a low rent 1980s tribute band, and sound like Younger Younger 28s but without the irony. Yes, that bad.»

New Order - Krafty

Review by Anthony Gibbons

If one was indeed up at the break of day, trying to get to work before it got too late, and driving down a more-than-likely crowded road, this is NOT the sort of thing one would wish to hear on a freezing Monday morning in Farnborough.»

"I've lifted enough amps in my life. I think I've suffered enough."

In Depth by Anthony Gibbons

Nirvana. There we said it. Nine Black Alps will no doubt groan collectively at the very mention of the name. Yet, the influence of Seattle's finest infuses infectious new single 'Shot Down' with pure, punk rock adrenaline, an angry energy which fuels Nine Black Alps live, driving them on even when they are virtually on their knees with 'flu, as they were in Cambridge when DiS went to meet them at the run down local polytechnic.»

Phantom Buffalo - Shishimumu

Review by Anthony Gibbons

Hailing from Portland, Maine, USA, Phantom Buffalo seemingly inhabit a dope-fuelled world illustrated by 'Mad' magazine listening to a downbeat, off kilter soundtrack recorded on an ancient two inch analogue tape.»

Visionstate - Demo

Review by Anthony Gibbons

This is a band growing in confidence - on stage as well off - and creating their own sound which isn't so much a breath of fresh air, more like a force nine gale. God only knows what they'll sound like in another six months time.»

"We're a bit like The Monkees... but without being twats"

In Depth by Anthony Gibbons

Birmingham’s Editors have been compared to Echo & The Bunnymen or - sigh, how obvious? - Joy Division. Don’t be fooled. Sure, Editors have their earnest side but these are not gloomy men moping about in long coats. No sir.»
