This conversation includes chat about the writing of the album, Jimmy's seven "synth symphonies", a photograph which inspired the album, rock'n'roll's existential crisis, whether 'protest music is dead', but the bulk of the conversation swarms around the idea of authenticity in an age of Instagram and Urban Outfitters.»

Seeing as my Five-4-Friday hasn't happened the past two weeks (blame Live at Leeds, Camden Crawl and Great Escape ), so this week I thought I'd collect together a heap of things I've been listening to and loving, that have either hit my inbox or been spaffed about on my social network feeds. This mixture of videos and SoundClouds and stuff and things, all probably vaguely suffering from drizzle-misery, with a slice of a heart-ache cake on the side... »

Halls has been a name whispered on a need-to-know-basis over on the DiS boards since the release of his Fragile EP (which you'll find streaming in full at the end of this piece). If you can imagine Burial remixing Shearwater or James Blake producing the next Martin Grech/Thom Yorke record, then throw a hint of Nils Frahm's haunting pianos into the mix, you might find yourself in a place not too far from the grandeur of this young talent»

We are throwing one of our little events for you (well, as long as you live near-ish to London) next Wednesday, the 23rd of May. It's sort of a 'party' but in the spirit of DiS, it won't necessarily be the cheeriest, most Guetta-esque shebang. Alas, there will be no foam or glitter guns. And although we'll be DJing, you don't need to worry if 'throwing shapes' isn't your thing.»

As an integral part of Broken Social Scene, and now as one of third Eight And A Half - who play their first UK shows this week - Justin Peroff is clearly a man who knows his way around a beat. Ah, The Great Escape festival. 300+ acts/bands playing over three days and nights on Britain's beautiful south coast in the city of Brighton. To say that we are excited is a given, but we might just be as daunted and overwhelmed by the sprawling line-up. While we know we will miss far more of the event than we'll actually manage to see, here are 10 names you should stick on your schedule, double underline and draw little stars around, according to me (the editor of this website).»

Eight And a Half are three Canadian gents making sumptuous synth rock. Notably their line-up is two parts ex-Stills and one ex-Broken Social Scene.
