Proudhon

The Joy Of Sex

Label: MidMarch Records Release Date: 01/11/2004

7098
Mike_Diver by Mike Diver November 18th, 2004

Well, Proudhon certainly have one thing in their favour on this EP: they do not fuck around. The cover promises '16.06 minutes of rock 'n' roll action', and opener 'This Aeroplane Is Falling And The Engine Is Ablaze' doesn't disappoint. This brutality is carried over into 'Romeo Vs Juliet' before a slightly mellower edge is exposed on 'R&R'. For a while, anyway; the song eventually lurches into dynamic hardcore a la the tracks before it. From the song titles alone you may have sussed that this Brighton-based outfit are fully entrenched in the filed of post-hardcore, albeit the more inventive, Botch-style side of it. Bands apeing such influential acts are two a penny these days, but Proudhon have potential for sure, and these four tracks pack punch enough to set them above so many of their UK peers. As chaotic as fellow South Coast metallers Johnny Truant, but with the all-important spirit of adventure and invention, Proudhon could well be a band to watch in 2005.
