A Month in Records: April 2005
A Month in Records: April 2005
disnews by DiS News May 3rd, 2005
Hello May; is that? Yes, I believe that is the sun... hello late spring! Such a glorious time; new hope, new love, new records to buy. And April presented a veritable bouquet of top recorded delights. There were American legends, returning indie heroes, poetic soothsayers and everything else inbetween. Of course, though it's not just the LPs that inform a month in review; there's key gigs, exciting single releases, and big news. So as we expand the historical documentation that these articles portentiously wish to become, here's a selection of April items to mull over...

Do Me Bad Things - Yes!
One of those bands that split opinion like a diamante musical chainsaw. Is the Bad Things cocktail of rock, soul, pop and erm, cocktail a hideous malformed disaster, or a pop-literate daring masterpiece? Whatever it is, it requires your ears and your opinion... ...

Saul Williams- LP
One of those rare 5/5 treats: An album of such hugeness, that our review merely flails at his keyboard. Occasionally, words emitted from him, and they said things like "Poetic licenses [are] torn into quarters. No man has the right to rhyme this well." Praise indeed, for a contender of DiS' LP of the year award.

Autechre- Untilted
Not just a clever headline, Autechre's nth album in their 14 year career shows that they're still going strong, pushing boundaries and reshaping the edges. It's one of those records that's "just begging to be heard at the back of the darkest dancefloor at 3am in the morning." Good, then.

British Sea Power- Open Season
Some would have BSP as the saviours of Britain - the whole country, let alone its music. And in the face of such fervent fan love, the pressure is on for the Brighton soothsayers to spread their wings and their message far and wide. Second album syndrome then: a triumph of effervescent gloom? Or merely a depressing failure to match ambition?

Tom Vek - We Have Sound
It's always a little whiffy of desperate bullsh*t when people keep banging on about 'development', 'sketches of future glories' and a 'promising start' before someone releases their first ever record. Maybe it's just not as good as it's meant to be. Perhaps though, with Tom Vek's debut 'We Have Sound', it's a genuine point. Tommy's a headscratcher, but possibly, just possibly, he's got a chance...

Art Of Fighting - Second Storey
"‘Second Storey’ then is a cathartic, emotive, and at times, uncomfortable album, and one of this year’s best. Look, it made me cry: what more recommendation do you need?" - that's what our reviewer said. Never let it be known that we shy away from our own beautiful feelings and that we're not willing to share. The soft get. We'll let him off though - it is a great record...

Hot Hot Heat- Elevator
It's probably going to be this year's slip-through-the-cracks LP, but don't let that happen, as HHH's second LP is over-stuffed full of wonderful, manic craziness. You deserve the insanity - check it out.

Coldplay- Speed Of Sound
Cheekily appearing on iTunes the other week, the grinding gears of the Coldplay machine crack themselves into operation. Strangely enough, some people think their return is good news, while other people would rather barf their pancreas out...

Dustins Bar Mitzvah - Lucy/Jimmy White

It's a Larndarn thing, innit. Sean Adams reckons that "It’s evidence that if you hate a scene enough you too can create something more vital and exciting. In fact, this is the first piece of proof since the Snow White single, and little before it, that London is actually a more f*cking happening place than all those scuzzy-two-bob plastic screw Poptones and Art Brut side-projects would lead you to believe."

Forward Russia / This Et Al  - Nine / He Shoots Presidents
Of course, it's all brewing in Leeds too - straight off the Dance To The Radio record label, Steven Lamaq reckons it's like, the best thing ever made, since like, Smirnoff Ice. And he's not far off - one of those essential bits of vinyl for 2005...

News: There was the panic that CBGBs - that mecca of NY Punk might close, bands like The Sound Explosion and Kasabian getting injured all over the gaff, a nice debate about the best indie disco ever (drop your favourite in there), official confirmation of Radiohead making the best album in the world ever , and the fact that we told everyone about the Glastonbury line-up before everyone else - HA!

DiScuss: What are your moments/records/sporting events of the month? Which are the best/worst?
