Cat Power has been rewarded for recording The Greatest with this year's Shortlist Music Prize.
The award, whose stature kinda mirrors that of our Mercury, was awarded to the singer by a panel that included Franz Ferdinand, Panic! at the Disco, Sufjan Stevens, Snow Patrol, The Killers and Flaming Lips.
That panel - hit and miss? Remaining 'listmaker' KT Tunstall probably tips it off target, but witnesses say she was as oblivious as she uttered thus:
"Cat Power's album quickly got under my skin. She has one of the most beguiling voices around. 'The Greatest' is an immediate classic that will never age."
We'll see. The singer, real name Chan Marshall, is the first woman to win the prize in its six year history. Six years? Not too long - may as well list the previous winners, working forwards from '01: Sigur Ros, N*E*R*D, Damien Rice, TV on the Radio and Sufjan Stevens.
DiS isn't sure if Marshall will be presented with a big bag of cash/giant cheque - but the money will be spinning anyway, since the victorious record will be given primacy on the iTunes Store this week. The reason for that ad? The Greatest now includes a new, digitally exclusive cut - "Up and Gone". So if you're interested in that, it looks like it just got greater.
