Believe us when we tell you that Nashville's Cortney Tidwell is a rare, rare talent. Possessed with a voice so powerful she could sink well-off-shore tankers from crumbling clifftops, and able to balance that power with the sort of sublime beauty that folks so often turn to Cat Power for, she's a singer-songwriter of truly remarkable potential.
We heard her self-titled EP and swooned, like first-crush teens in science class, blissfully ignorant of whatever formulas were being chalked onto a blurring blackboard ahead of us; then we heard her debut album, Don't Let Stars Keep Us Tangled Up, and pencilled it straight into our end-of-year runnings.
Suffice to say that it's a wonderful long-player, and is released through Ever Records on Monday (July 10). You should buy it. Have a listen to some samples here
Now, while we appreciate that our excitement is often reciprocated by you, our readers regular and otherwise, we don't always expect you to take our words alone for it, whatever it is. So, we've a pair of tickets to give away for Tidwell's one-off London show next week - Tuesday July 11 at Bush Hall. She then plays the Latitude Festival alongside the likes of Mogwai, Snow Patrol, Saul Williams and Giant Drag.
To be in with a chance of winning the tickets, just answer this question...
Cortney Tidwell last toured the UK in support of which much-acclaimed alt-country star?
Was it...
A) Howe Gelb?
B) Willie Nelson?
C) Bobcat Goldthwaite?
Send you answer to mike DOT diver AT drownedinsound DOT com, by 1pm on Friday July 7.
Please write "Cortney competition" in the subject field.
Good luck!
