Winterbrief

Take The Town

Label: Intellectos

jvergho by Julia Vergho August 29th, 2001

And yet another album from Philadelphia's favourite synthpopsters, Winterbrief. With Take The Town, the riotous duo prove once again that they ARE the future of Casiocore Cool. "Life of the Party" comes as a Bis-esque opening track, complete with shouty go!go!go! style vocals and cute keyboardlines. "Young Bright Thing" leaves the early Pet Shop Boys look pale, this is more 80s than the 80s ever were, just violently speeded up. "Foreign Object" is an overload of "Boom! Crash! Shake! Handclap" drum machine accompanied by voices. We're all astronauts, you know. "Another Number" is back to the Bis theme again, but this time it's Bis ca. Social Dancing rather than Bis ca. Kandy Pop. It even comes with the sounds of ringing doorbells. "The Dancing"...makes you dance! Honestly. "It's a Dilly" sounds like Lolita Storm after some Sherbert Saucers filled to the brim with cocaine. Addictive, so to say. "You so Quacky" is fashionably space - themed. The rayguns are upon us and the (S)Martians will take no prisoners! "It happens to the Best of Us..." sports distorted keyboard sounds and a rather monotone drum beat. Fortunately this weird scenario is soon lightened up by sugarsweet girl vocals a la Stereolab. "Manufacture Me" is pure lipstick anarchy. The girl is armed and if you don't leg it pretty son they're gonna come after you, disco dancing and shouting. Finally, "Chick Flick" presents itself in a brand new remix by no other than electro-terrorists The Hit Device. VERY Digital Hardcore, sounds like someone was trying to beat the shit out of the song with a huge virtual sledgehammer. Overall, this is a great album for the young, the twee and those who still believe the NES was the best thing sinced sliced Pong.

Catch Winterbrief on their UK tour from October onwards!
