The Basement

Medicine Day

Label: Deltasonic Release Date: 17/02/2003

domgourlay by Dom Gourlay February 13th, 2003

Well it’s that time of year again, when the NME hold their annual 'Scraping The Bottom Of The Barrel' awards, which basically involves forcing the collective works of some second rate bunch of chancers down people’s throats ‘til their eyes, ears, nose, mouth and stomach need to be removed. Previous winners have included Coldplay, The Strokes and The Libertines.

One of this year’s contestants are called The Basement.

Apparently there’s a lot of love in The Basement – for Bob Dylan that is.

Not content with naming the band after part of the opening line to Dylan's ‘Subterranean Homesick Blues’, they even have the audacity to christen their debut single after part of another line from 'Subterranean...'.

And what does it sound like?

Well, if Robert Zimmerman himself ever contracted laryngitis and thought singing along in a croaky voice to a couple of old La's b-sides might just cure him of his ailments you would be on the right track.

Except the only cure for this is the STOP button on my CD player.

Expect the next single to be called ‘Tambourine Man’s A Changin’ In The Wind’.
