My Chemical Romance

I’m Not Okay (I Promise)

Label: Reprise Records Release Date: 07/03/2005

Matthewjbutler by Matthew Butler March 11th, 2005

There's something particularly disturbing about songs written by grown men who really should know better than writing music which says 'like, y'know, life, like totally sucks, man'. Black-varnish-nailed sixth-formers no doubt find that this soundtracks their suburbanised bedroom hell, but My Chemical Romance all have stable girlfriends, healthy bank balances and rather nice houses (probably).

Not that it matters though; this is the kind of exhilarating burst of snotty punk that Blink-182 would occasionally moon at us with before their recent demise. A chugging brilliant slice of danceable pop, this almost makes up for the hundreds of whining groups of their ilk who clutter up and stink out the music scene as though someone has forgotten to take the bins out.

Okay so the turbo-angst theme is a teenage goth's wet dream, (literally perhaps - it's a difficult age after all), but the track has enough energy to soundtrack a Rocky montage and the chorus packs such a large punch it's hard not to be knocked out. Unfortunately the extras are a demo and live track which are about as exciting as a demo and live track can be, (i.e. not at all), but the A-side is much more than okay (I promise).
