Garbage

Why Do You Love Me

Label: Warner Bros. Release Date: 04/04/2004

8015
mannot by Michaela Annot March 30th, 2005

Hello again Garbage**. We see you're back from a long hiatus after your frankly, disappointing last album. Have you come here to make amends and re-establish yourself in the higher echelon? No? Hmmm.

So much gloss, so much veneer... for a frontwoman who's always prided herself on her 'in your face' image, there's so much production to hide behind here so as to almost completely obscure the message of the song. Which is? That Shirley's still angry, still full of vicious laments, but this time, it just doesn't hold. 'Why Do You Love Me' sounds like it was created in a robo-rock lab by a selection of creatively impared session musicians, which probably isn't too far from the truth.

Whereas ten years ago Garbage were interesting, different and cool, now they are none of them, happy to sail along on the FM airwaves with nary a thought to their potential, reputation or goddamit, responsibilities to alt.rock. Sooo disappointing.
