Eight months ago, I compared Bristol five-piece Undercut to Del Amitri. Rather disappointingly the band have neglected to mention this in their promotional material, preferring to be spoken of in the same breath as U2, the Foo Fighters and REM. Well, that's their choice. I feel duty bound, though, to point out that 'So Beautiful' and 'Backroom', B-sides to new single 'To Die For' (of which more presently), are about as Del Amitri as you get. Which is a good thing, if you're in any doubt.

But enough of that, it's the A-side you want my opinion of and that's an Undercut of a different colour. 'To Die For' is an unassuming and charming four minutes of pop-rock with a subdued but nagging chorus and slick production. U2 comparisons are valid, but pomp is kept to a minimum and the style never threatens to overwhelm the substance. Vocalist Johnny Benn has one of those voices that's effortlessly exquisite, coming in somewhere between Peter Gabriel and James Dean Bradfield with the merest hint of Chris Martin. Another winner from the band I like to refer to as This Year's Del Amitri.
