I am mellowing with age, there is no doubt about it. I can tell the slippers and pipe are just around the corner and it won't be long until I tell the kids next door to turn down that infernal racket, but bands like Fly 66 make that OK.
Coming out of Ipswich, this acoustic 3 piece have been around in one form or another for around a decade, but now people are starting to listen, and it is not hard to see why. Taking the fragile beauty of artists such as Nick Drake and simplifying it down to its most basic form is what the band do, and very well at that. 'Sugar Love' is a captivating 4 minutes of music that is so subtle, comforting and melodic that you can't help but close your eyes and just appreciate what is meeting your ears. Vocally, Justin Bickers has a voice that can do anything to you emotionally, whether it uplifts the spirit or reduces you to tears. There are times when he even sounds a little like Holly Johnson and that's no bad thing.
It will be some time from now, but when the day comes and I am sat in my rocking chair and thinking of times past, I genuinely hope this is the soundtrack playing in the background.
