Derrero

Fixations With Long Journeys

Label: Big Noise Recordings Release Date: 26/05/2000

jmoore by James Moore May 26th, 2000

Derrero finally get around to releasing their second LP on the Cardiff label Big Noise Recordings.

The opener ‘Floaters’ begins with

Ashley singing some soothing "aaah’s" then Andy takes control of the

mic and screams his heart out, about well erm... _“temple pond, verbal bond,

attic lice”_ and various other things that only make sense to mentally ill. See

if you listened to the first 30 seconds of each of the fourteen songs, then

Derrero would sound pretty normal, even average but thankfully their songs are

each around 3 minutes long and somewhere in the middle the songs change into

complete and utter chaos. That’s why I love Derrero, they’re totally unique,

unpredictable and completely fuckin’ barmy with it.

The albums like a compilation album, as all

the songs are so outstandingly different. With its layered harmonies and daft

lyrics “a spice girl rack, oregano dandruff on my twirly moustache” **‘Mud

Skipper’** might have been one of the songs that didn’t quite make it on

‘Fuzzy Logic’ coz they thought it was too fucked up. Then there’s

‘Pets/Coppice’ which reminds me of Gorky’s gentle ballads and not just

because of addition of the violin. There are also songs that remind me of Grandaddy

as well as Idlewild.

Derrero are one of England’s best newish

bands make sure you buy the album, the E.P’s and then make your own bloody

t-shirt.
