Vic Twenty

Never Mind The Balearics...

Label:

kdornan by Kate Dornan May 7th, 2002

Blimey, retro futurism is everywhere at the moment. Vic Twenty are more electrobounce than electroclash, and even their broadsides (an entire song about not liking Ibiza, blessed with the line 'give me Johnny, not Zoe Ball') are funny. Where a lot of multiple-synth lineups strive for postmodern chill or string-pad-washed atmosphere, this duo purvey unselfconsciously dinky pop.

Txt Msg is a cheerfully bitchy break-up-by-text ditty which succeeds in being somewhat less annoying than other songs about mobile phones - although you'd think the things force themselves onto our consciousness enough that they don't need reiterating. Hell to Helsinki is about the pains of love 'cross timezones, whilst in the aforementioned Ibiza Mon Amour our heroes resolutely refuse to emulate Kevin and Perry. Basically, it's good fun all the way, and although a short time ago the David-and-Goliath stance of vintage synthpop against drug-addled dance might have seemed laughable, in London at least they don't seem to be alone... if Vic Twenty are sometimes stating the obvious in an I Love The '00s style, it's done so openly that you can't really help but smile. And on the Ibiza subject, they are the new Teen Anthems and I claim my digital 8-track.
